After he finished Day 1a of the 2015 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Manchester Man Eventas chip leader, we said that the legendary Ali Mallu would do one of two things: (1) bust out well before the money places or (2) go on and take down the whole shebang. He did the latter.

Day 3 of the £200,000 guaranteed Main Event started with 14 players in contention for the £59,000 first place prize. Within two hours of the restart, those 14 were reduced to the final table of nine after the eliminations of Michelle Mercer, Alex Lindop, Osman Mustangolu, Andreas Olympios and the final table bubble boy Alex Golubevs.

The cards had been in the air at the final table for less than half an hour when the tournament became an all-male affair and the wait for a female GUKPT Main Event champion continued.

Katie Swfit pushed all-in for 105,000 with and found a caller in the shape of Tom Dunwoodie who held . The flop fell to give Dunwoodie a gutshot straight draw in addition to his overcard, but the turn changed nothing. The same can’t be said for the on the river, a card that improved Swift to a set of queens, a hand crushed by the nut straight of her opponent.

Ten minutes after Swift’s demise, Asif Choudry opened the betting and was called by both Liam Hooks and Mark Davey. Both players checked to Choudry on the flop, Choudry then jamming all-in for 90,000. Hooks mucked and Davey called, turning over the lowly as he did so. Choudry showed and was a huge favourite to double, that was until the turn gifted Davey two pair. The completed the board and Choudry was sent to the rail.

Another two hours passed by without an exit, but then Jorge Rosa pushed his 240,000 stack into the middle during the 8,000/16,000/2,000a level with what turned out to be and Tim Hickling called with the . The board was safe for Hickling’s tens and Rosa’s run came to an end.

It was also a coinflip that dispatched Davey to the rail in sixth place, Davey choosing to jam 180,000 chips with and Hooks making the call with . Davey didn’t even get close to connecting with the board had to make do with finishing sixth.

By the time the next casualty was confirmed the blinds had increased to 10,000/20,000/2,000a so Nigel Ventre’s 340,000 shove was worth 17 big blinds. Ventre’s push with was called by Mallu’s and although Mallu didn’t improve to a pair, he did manage to catch a runner-runner flush on the board to bust Ventre and send his own stack past the one million mark.

Hickling then ran into the run-good of Mallu to fall in fourth place for £16,600 – his largest-ever tournament score. Hickling min-raised to 40,000 on the button with and Mallu responded with a three-bet to 150,000 from the small blind. Hickling then tak-jammed for 370,000 and Mallu called with the less-than-stellar . Mallu’s call was rewarded with a five on the flop and trips on the turn, a card that left Hickling drawing dead. The river completed the board and Hickling was gone.

Three-handed play lasted more than two hours and ended with Hooks falling by the wayside. Tom Dunwoodie made it 100,000 to play, Hooks three-bet all-in for 600,000 and Dunwoodie quickly called. Hooks showed and Dunwoodie the . Dunwoodie improved to a set on the flop and then to a full house on the turn. The inconsequential rounded off the board and heads-up was set.

Mallu went into heads-up with a 2,280,000 to 1,680,000 and with the shortest stack having more than 40 big blinds everyone was ready for the long haul. However, the one-on-one encounter was brief because all of the chips went in on a board, Dunwoodie holding and Mallu . The on the river kept Mallu’s top pair best and Dunwoodie was eliminated in second place.
